Welcome to Nourished 2nd Act: A New Chapter Begins

When I stepped away from my career as a hotel chef because of a shoulder injury, I imagined slower mornings, less stress, and finally having time to enjoy life.

Instead, I found myself spending most days in rehabilitation.

What started as an injury to my right shoulder became more complicated than I ever expected. I thought six months of treatment would be enough. A year later, I was still recovering—and before my right shoulder had healed, my left shoulder developed frozen shoulder as well.

Around the same time, menopause quietly entered my life.

Some days my shoulders hurt so much that getting dressed felt like a challenge. Other days, I wondered whether I'd ever feel like myself again.

Retirement wasn't supposed to look like this.

Learning to Slow Down

For almost twenty years, my life revolved around work.

As a chef, I was always moving. Long shifts, weekends, holidays, and the constant pressure of a busy kitchen became normal. Outside of work there were bills to pay, a household to manage, and plans for the future.

Looking back, I realise I spent years believing that being busy meant I was living well.

It took an injury to make me stop.

At first, slowing down felt uncomfortable.

Then something unexpected happened.

Finding Joy in Ordinary Days

Because I couldn't return to the kind of work I had always done, I started looking for something I could do from home.

That's how this blog began.

Not as a business.

Not as a grand plan.

Just a place to write.

As I wrote, I began noticing things I had overlooked for years.

Every morning, my four-year-old Maltipoo, Mandoo, waits patiently by the front door for our walk. Even on days when my shoulders ache, she reminds me to step outside.

Preparing a simple dinner has become something I genuinely enjoy instead of another task to finish.

A tidy home, a warm meal, a quiet afternoon and a peaceful walk—these small moments have become some of the happiest parts of my day.

Twenty years ago, I probably wouldn't have noticed them.

Now I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Why I Created Nourished 2nd Act

This isn't a blog about having everything figured out.

I'm still recovering from frozen shoulder.

I'm still learning how to live with the changes that menopause brings.

I'm still discovering what retirement really means.

But maybe that's exactly why this blog exists.

Many of us spend decades building careers, raising families and planning for "someday."

Then one day our bodies slow down before our minds are ready.

Life changes.

Our priorities change.

Sometimes we have to build an entirely new version of ourselves.

If that's where you are, I hope you'll feel at home here.

What You'll Find Here

Nourished 2nd Act is a place where I share the things I'm learning along the way, including:

  • Recovering from frozen shoulder and staying active after injury

  • Living well through menopause and healthy ageing

  • Simple home cooking and everyday wellness

  • Life after retirement and finding purpose again

  • Personal finance and investing for a more secure future

  • Life with my little companion, Mandoo

I don't claim to be an expert in any of these subjects.

What I can offer is something just as valuable—real experience.

Everything I write comes from my own journey, the lessons I've learned, the mistakes I've made, and the small discoveries that have helped me move forward.

If something works for me, I'll share it honestly.

If I make mistakes, I'll share those too.

The Second Act Isn't About Starting Over

People often talk about retirement as though life suddenly becomes easier.

My experience has been different.

Sometimes retirement begins with uncertainty instead of freedom.

Sometimes recovery takes longer than expected.

Sometimes our bodies force us to change direction.

But I've also learned that slowing down isn't always a loss.

It can be an opportunity to notice the life we've been rushing past.

That's what "Nourished 2nd Act" means to me.

Not chasing a perfect retirement.

Not pretending everything is easy.

Simply creating a life that feels healthier, calmer and more meaningful than the one I left behind.
